Mt Meru — 4 days
Meru over four days — the standard acclimatisation climb before Kilimanjaro, and a fine mountain in its own right.
The only approach from the north, on the drier Kenyan side. The quietest of the main routes.
Start on the northern side at Rongai Gate (about 1,950 m) and walk through farmland and pine forest to Simba Camp (about 2,625 m).
A long day across moorland towards Mawenzi Tarn (about 4,330 m), with views over the Kenyan plains.
Cross the barren saddle to Kibo Hut (about 4,700 m) and rest.
Start around midnight for Gillman's Point and Uhuru Peak (5,895 m), then descend to Horombo Hut.
Descend through forest to Marangu Gate.
